BGMB 2 Year Party!

Recently, BGMB celebrated our two-year anniversary — two years of focusing on emerging professionals and people of color in museums and the art world. We couldn’t have made it this far without the support of our DC community and so we opened the doors to the Anacostia Arts Center for a night of connecting, discussing, and celebrating the work we are all doing together.

We owe a huge thank you not only to those of you that have read the blog, whether from the beginning or just recently, but also to everyone who came out on a rainy DC night to join us for selfie-stations, drinks, and the amazing, real conversation that our speakers brought. Thanks to Anacostia Arts Center for affording us the space to house this event, A Creative DC for the selfie station and props, and our speakers Chanel Compton (Executive Director of the Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center), Martina Dodd (Curator and Co-founding Editor of DIRT), Jess Solomon (Creator of Art in Praxis), and Allison Lida Thaymon (Founding Editor in Chief of Purple is to Lavender).

Our speakers did an amazing job leading us on a discussion around the following questions and so much more!

1. How does your work strive to help improve the arts and/or humanities & culture field.

2. What has been your greatest challenge in finding sustainable work for yourself in the field?

3. How does the work you do hold space for other people of color in the arts & humanities field? How important is that to you?

4. How would you like to see D.C.’s arts & culture community improved?
5. Who else should be here? Please suggests other POCs who deserve a shoutout.
Thank you to all who contributed to the discussion online and IRL. Here’s to two more years, at least!

  1. Congrats on your two-year anniversary! I’ve just discovered you all and I’m new-ish to the DC area, so I’m pretty hyped to see a blog about my favorite thing in the DMV. I look forward to seeing any events or reviews you have coming up. Cheers!
